The word ‘tsetse’ comes from Tswana, a language of Southern Africa, and in that language, the word means fly.
Tsetse are large biting flies from Africa which live by feeding on the blood of animals. They have been inhabiting earth for past 34 million years.
There are 22 different species of this fly and they normally breed near rivers and streams.
They are responsible for transmitting the virus that causes disease sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in cattle.
These diseases are prevalent in large parts of Africa. The clearing of large forests have caused this fly to spread to more populated areas and hence the diseases.
